This is not your average larch – not just because of its size, but because of its story. It was planted over 250 yeaars ago together with four other larch seedlings. The first of the five seedlings was cut down after only 50 years. Two more were cut down after 70 years to be used in the construction of ships. The penultimate tree was struck by lightning in 1905, and is now lining the walls of Blair Castle. ‘The Parent Larch’ as it is known has been responsible for millions of larch trees growing across the Perthshire hillsides grown from its seeds over the centuries.
