Tsuga heterophylla

Scone Palace

This western hemlock at Scone Palace has a monstrous trunk. Although, unfortunately the trunk is dotted with bracket fungus, suggesting it is stating to decay on the inside. Despite the fungus infestation, the tree is looking in quite good condition for its size with numerous large branches, some even coming off the trunk perpendicular before abruptly pointing 90 degrees back up towards the sky. I’m unsure of the exact age of the tree, but after doing a little research, the western hemlock was only introduced to the UK in 1852, so this tree can’t be any older than that. A tree only around 170 years old or less of this size is quite impressive to say the least!
